Music

Music is a vital part of Capoeira Angola. It is the channel through which energy flows from the people playing capoeira, the people playing music and the rest. The people playing capoeira listen to the music and follow its rythm and pace. Sometimes the rythm or the singing will encourage them to change their game and sometimes the musicians can be inspired by the game to change the music. Movements and music merge.

Ladainha: The song that opens the roda of Capoeira Angola is sung by the person playing the gunga. This person can also be said to be the leader of the roda, and it is usually the most experienced capoeirista. There are many ladainhas to choose from, some concerning specific old stories or myths, others being more general about the history of Brazil and even other ladainhas are pure poetry. On top of that, one can even mix them and improvise!

Louvação: The ladainha is immediately followed by a series or 'calls' that invoke and give thanks to God, spirits, mestres and capoeira.

Corrido: During the entire roda, one person at a time from the orchestra takes the lead and sings songs that the rest respond to by adding a chorus.
